3D printing is enabling makers to push the limits of creativity as they explore the connections between computer aided design and the physical world. Now it is your turn to leverage this new technology and design a 3D printable object that showcases the best of what the New Jersey maker community has to offer.

2019 Challenge Theme
This year’s BuildTak Design Challenge theme is toys! Specifically, you are challenged to design a 3D model of a spinning top using whatever creative and imaginative idea comes to you! For more information on what a spinning top is and how it works, you can reference this article on Wikipedia.

How to Participate
Using any 3D design software, create an object that can be 3D printed. Once you have finished your design, email a copy of the .STL file to contest@njmakersday.org. You don’t need a 3D printer to participate in the 3D design challenge. The deadline for submission is April 1, 2019.

The following information will be required for all submissions:

  • Subject line: “BuildTak 3D Design Challenge”
  • Your Full Name
  • Your Email address
  • Which category you are submitting for (“Up to age 13” or “Age 14 to Adult”)
  • Attached copy of an original 3D model design in .STL format. The file name should consist of your first name, last name, and age category (“under13” or “over14”) punctuated by underscores – for example john_smith_under13 or jane_doe_over14

Judging and Contest Rules
This contest is only open to NJ residents (must be able to validate your NJ address to receive your prize). Entries will be judged on creativity, functionality, and how well your design fits the NJ Makers Day challenge theme. The spinning top must a be model that would be no larger than 3 inches x 3 inches x 3 inches if it were to be printed. The design must be one that would freely spin if turned or twisted with your hand. Designs must be original. Models downloaded from Thingiverse, Shapeways or other model sharing services will not be considered. Designs will be judged in two categories:

  • Up to 13 years old
  • 14 years old to Adult

Prizes
Prizes will be awarded in both judging categories. Winners will be notified by email by April 19, 2018. Select contest winners may also have their models produced as 3D prints and exhibited in locations around the state for public viewing.

Thanks to NJ Makers Day sponsor BuildTak, as well as the partnership of the Bergen Makerspace for powering this challenge!
