For the third year, NJMD is proud to announce the BuildTak 3D Design Challenge for 2018, open to all NJ residents!
Three-dimensional printing enables makers to push the limits of creativity as they explore the connections between computer-aided design and the physical world. Now it is your turn to leverage this new technology and design a 3D printable object that showcases the best of what the New Jersey’s maker community has to offer.
2018 Challenge Theme
This year’s BuildTak Design Challenge theme is piggy banks! You are challenged to design a 3D model of any type of piggy bank that your creativity and imagination can conjure up!
How to Participate
Using any 3D design software, create an object that can be 3D printed. Once you have finished your design, email a copy of the .STL file to contest@njmakersday.org. You don’t need a 3D printer to participate in the 3D design challenge. The deadline for submission is April 1, 2018.
The following information will be required for all submissions:
- Subject line: “BuildTak 3D Design Challenge”
- Your full name
- Your email address
- That category that you are submitting for (“Up to age 13” or “Age 14 to adult”)
- Attached copy of an original 3D model design in .STL format. The file name should be in the following format: first name_ last name_category (with category written as “Under13” or “Over14”). Example: “john_smith_under13”
Judging and Contest Rules
This contest is only open to NJ residents (must be able to validate your NJ address to receive their prizes). Entries will be judged on how well the design fits the NJ Makers Day challenge theme, creativity and functionality. The piggy bank must be designed to be able to hold a minimum of ten (10) quarters and have a way to get money both in and out of the bank.
Designs must be original. Models downloaded from Thingiverse, Shapeways or other model sharing services will not be considered. Designs will be judged in two categories:
- Up to 13 years old
- 14 years old to adult
Prizes
Prizes will be awarded in both judging categories. Winners will be notified by email by April 13, 2018. Select contest winners may also have their models produced as 3D prints and exhibited in locations around the state for public viewing.
Thanks to NJ Makers Day sponsor BuildTak as well as the partnership of the Bergen Makerspace for powering this challenge!
